“I have a present for you,” I said as I slid the wrapped item across the counter. Just a slight moment of hesitation, and then understanding washed over her features. A smile spread across her face. She knew what a special moment this was for me. She oh-so-carefully unwrapped the package, and I could hardly contain myself. I think the others at the counter wondered what was going on.
I tried not to fidget. When the wrapping paper finally came off, she beamed and sighed at what was in front of her. I tried to find other things to look at as she slowly opened the book. She gently turned pages, skimming the title page and introduction for a sense of the contents. “Aren’t you in here?” she asked.
“Page sixty-nine,” I replied, trying to keep my voice calm.
She eventually found page sixty-nine, and took the time to read the four hundred or so words right then. “Jenny, you write beautifully.” Wow. What a compliment, coming from a woman who knows books like a mechanic knows cars!
“Maybe some day I’ll bring you another one, all on my own,” I said. I had taken care of the rest of my business, and I needed to leave. I was taking up too much of her time.
I left the building with a smile as wide as the Cheshire cat’s grin. I had just donated a book to the library, and it had a piece written by me inside!
Thanks, Ms. J, for sharing in my excitement. Your reaction was like sprinkles on an ice cream cone– a simple pleasure, but oh, so sweet!

Karen, I LOVED your story! I’m about half way through the book, and I feel like any autism parent who picks it up will feel like they have over 40 new friends who “get it”. This librarian has been amazing w/Dr. J–she does not freak out when he goes behind the counter, or even, *gasp* into the inner sanctum of the OFFICES! Another librarian there has Aspergers and lets him check out his books! They have let me start a special needs story time and have been extremely supportive. I could not be more blessed in this area!

Great story! That is awesome that you have a personal relationship with your librarian, and that she read it on the spot. So glad you are enjoying the book…I can’t wait for everyone to read everyone else’s stuff!

Oh, the EDITOR has stopped by! What an honor. ;) I loved your ballerina story, too. Made me smile in a big way.
