Remembering Veterans Day through Literature

I love historical fiction. My favorite era is World War II. I’m not quite sure why–maybe there’s the underlying theme of saving the world. Today we have a guest post from Tricia Goyer, an author who writes historical fiction, among other things. I found her through my new job with Home Educating Family (she writes in their magazine). I can’t wait to read some of her books!

Stories Inspired

by Tricia Goyer

When researching for my first novel From Dust and Ashes, I heard the story of a group of prisoners at Mauthausen Concentration Camp that greeted American GIs by playing the United States’ national anthem. This one story became the building block for my second novel, Night Song. In my research, I also came upon another Nazi camp that not only held musicians within its walls, this camp was also used to fool the Red Cross. Continue reading

Share the Wealth

This post is inspired by a Twitter conversation I had with two buddies and guests of MHM. We were discussing gluten-free finds, and I mentioned that we were having orange juice pancakes. One of my buddies exclaimed over my ingenuity. I don’t call it ingenuity. I call it desperation (explanation to come). Continue reading

>Something to Consider

>Just a quick note to give you something to think about. A week or so ago, a friend of mine posted on Facebook that a friend of hers met a lady who needed some clothing for her and her three children. Tonight her friend is going to meet me at training to collect some things a church friend and I have gathered up.

The point of this post is not to toot my own proverbial horn. The point is for you to look at saving money in a different light. I do not have hundreds of dollars I can give this lady to help her get on her feet. However, thanks to couponing, I had a stash that I could grab items from and clothes that don’t fit me anymore that I could pass along. When you are clipping coupons, you may come across coupons for items you don’t use. Perhaps you know they go on sale often. Consider clipping them once in a while and starting a giving stash. You never know who may benefit from your frugality.

Just Do It

I’ve been thinking about starting a personal blog (not about my boys) for a couple of weeks. Tonight I decided to “just do it.” I apologize in advance if I drive you crazy. Note the name of my blog–it is going to be a bit of everything. Anything I want.

I used to have more of a creative side to me, at least in the writing area. I feel like I have lost that part of me, and this is part of an effort to recapture it.

Tonight I started reading “Be Your Best–the Family Manager’s Guide to Personal Success” by Kathy Peel. It is about finding time as a busy woman to be able to manage yourself as well. So, there I sat, on my couch determined to start this book instead of watching another hour of tv. I’m taking notes, and get to the “Dreaming Exercise”. Now I have to quote here so you can get the full effect. “Imagine that there are no restrictions or obstacles in your life. You can do what you want to do and be who you want to be. Make a list of 10 things you would do if this were true.”

My list is still blank. Under it, I wrote “This is very hard for me to do. Not only am I a natural people-pleaser, but I feel like I have lost myself over the last 18 mos. My brain doesn’t work like it used to.

Then I read [from Kathy Peel] …’ We feel overwhelmed and focus on our liabilities, some of which are real but are greatly exaggerated, and some of which are imagined. What we must do instead is choose … to focus on our assets–what we do have and what we can do.” Well, if that isn’t ironic and a slap in the proverbial face!

So, I still can’t figure out my list, but I decided to start this blog. I am hoping it will help me have a chance to think once in a while, and also share other ideas with other people, as I am homebound almost every single day.

I hope to share recipes, bargain sites, thoughts, tips, helps, whatever I find useful somewhere else that might help somebody else. I hope that maybe you might say “hi” once in a while and share your own ideas, too.

Thanks.
