Autism parents who choose to homeschool their children often get extra questions. After all, why would we choose to homeschool a child who has social delays? Don’t they need to be in school to practice their social skills?
Last week I wrote my answer to that question on HEDUA’s blog.
Here’s what I said:
This question may unnerve new homeschoolers, especially those whose children already have social delays, but have no fear. Homeschoolers are probably some of the most socialized people! For now, we’ll save the discussion over socialization for other articles. Here are my top ten places to get socialization and practice social skills besides a traditional school:
10. The store–Stores provide an abundance of learning opportunities–how to wait in line, how to ask for help to find something, how to offer help to someone who needs it, and more. Your children also practice reading and math skills while in the store.

These tips are also beneficial for teaching social and pretend play. Pair social and pretend play with fun things! Model these behaviors and be sure to reinforce with established fun activities when the child emits any of these appropriate skills. Siblings can be an essential part of the modeling process and can help deliver reinforcing items and activities as well.
