When you think about driveways and playground for kids, most parents are always on high alert and monitor their kids all the time. The reason for this is quite simple; to ensure their kid’s safety. You never know when your child may end up straying into the road with other vehicles running by. But then again, you can’t deny your kids the chance to get out and play with other kids their age simply because you don’t want them to stray too far from your home either.
The simple matter here is that you, as the parent, will have to devise some methods to ensure that your kids can enjoy their childhood and have fun and stay safe at the same time. So, let’s dig in and discuss some of the tips that you can use as a parent to ensure your kid’s safety in your driveway.
1. Check around your car before starting it
Before you get into your car or even start your vehicle’s engine, you should walk around it and even check under it to ensure that no child is hiding beside or under it. You may never know, maybe the kids were out playing some game and some of them opted to hide behind or under your car. If you find this habit tiresome, you can always look for other older kids to perform this task for you. Better safe than sorry, right?
2. Accompany your young children when they are getting in or out of a vehicle
You should also form the habit of assisting your younger kids whenever they are alighting or entering your vehicle. Kids are known to be clumsy and may end up playing or not putting their full attention on what they are doing. And that includes entering or exiting a car. And this can cause some unnecessary injuries to the child.
3. Look for a safe playing ground for your kids
You should also make it your business to look for or create a safe and conducive playing ground for your kids. You should ensure that they never play too close to parked vehicles or on busy roads where moving vehicles are constantly passing by. As mentioned before, kids are generally clumsy and may not see the danger in playing on a busy road. They may end up getting injured or in unnecessary accidents which you would have been able to prevent.
4. Get a safe spot for them when nearby cars are about to move
You should also train your kids to get to specific safe zones where they will be safe from moving vehicles should they spot any vehicles approaching them.
5. Hold their hands firmly when walking in busy driveways or sidewalks
You should always ensure that you firmly hold your child’s hands when walking past busy driveways. Don’t let them slip from your sight one bit. Remember that they are safest when with you. Hold the hands of each child that you are with at that time.
6. Don’t use driveways as play areas
Warn your kids against choosing driveways as their playgrounds. This habit can be even more dangerous if the driveways are very busy and have vehicles entering and exiting all the time.
7. Pay attention to sensors and cameras available in the driveway when backing your vehicle
You should also pay close attention to your installed driveway cameras and driveway motion sensors when backing your cars in your driveways. You never know when some kid may come in and run across or behind your car without your knowledge. The driveway alarm is not only supposed to protect intruders but also protect you and your family from any possible accident in the driveway. You can avoid gruesome accidents this way too.
